The Movember Bucket List

November 30, 2012 Leave a comment

Today, I’d like to take a temporary break from my normal subject matter to thank everyone for their generous support and sponsorship of myself and my colleagues at Barton Willmore during our Movember fundraising efforts.

Clint, as my facial growth became to be known, had but a short time with us and by way of tribute to his departure today, I present below, in it’s entirety, his 30 day ‘Bucket List’ adventure! He will be missed.

November 1st: Mr and Mrs Bevan are pleased to announce a new addition to the family. His name is ‘Clint’ and he has taken up residence on Mr Bevan’s upper lip. Although Clint will only be with us for 30 days, he intends to lead a full and exciting life and has already started work on his ‘Bucket List’

November 2nd: Today, Clint got off to a flying start and surprised us all by Running with the Bulls at Pamplona!

November 3rd: Today, Clint travelled to Buenos Aires and learned to Tango!

November 4th: Today, Clint visited the Oktoberfest and got completely mullered!

November 5th: Today, Clint threw himself out of a perfectly good aeroplane and went skydiving!

November 6th: Today, Clint’s first novel, ‘Fifty Shades of Grey Facial Hair’, became a No.1 Bestseller!

November 7th: Today, Clint enjoyed a freshly rolled cigar in Havana!

November 8th: Today, Clint bathed in the Ganges during Makar Sankranti, and caught dysentery!

November 9th: Today, Clint and a couple of friends rode the Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi! 0-149mph in 4 seconds… easy!

November 10th: Today, Clint went to Vegas and bet it all on red!

November 11th: Today, Clint was photographed with Christ the Redeemer in Rio!

November 12th: Today, Clint drove the Nürburgring in under 10 minutes!

November 13th: Today, Clint joined the list of people you’d like to see throw themselves off a bridge, and went bungee jumping in New Zealand!

November 14th: Today, Clint paid a visit to the ‘Hottest’ place on earth, Death Valley in California. Though actually, he found it all a bit boring, so came home again.

November 15th: Today, Clint livened things up a bit and went to New Orleans to party at Mardi Gras! Nice.

November 17th: Today, Clint got in touch with his feminine side, and danced at the Rio Carnival!

November 20th: Today, Clint drove the entire length of Route 66, on his computer with Google Street View!

November 21st: Today, Clint swam with wild Dolphins! However, he found it quite dissatisfying, as the whole experience didn’t have any real porpoise!

21. Dolphins

November 22nd: Today, Clint blew the crap out of everything, during Chinese New Year in Shanghai!

27. Crap

November 28th: Today, Clint vowed to live without using any form of modern technology for a whole month! He lasted about 2 hours before he got a bit twitchy and went back to using his BlackBerry (as that didn’t really count, he said).

28. Technology

November 29th: Today, Clint watched a documentary on ‘freestyle’ rock climbing! ‘Stuff that for a game of soldiers!’ he thought, and went to the pub instead.

The lucky b***ard!

To Pay the Devil or not?

July 24, 2012 Leave a comment

Once again, I find that life can quickly condition us to expect more and more (or is it less and less?).

I found myself being grateful to BSkyB at the weekend for allowing us to watch the German Grand Prix, for free, without having to venture into the ‘Dark Side’ of the Internet to find a pirated feed that doesn’t get swamped, the instant the race starts!

Then I remembered that last year I was watching it for free anyway (or at least without the additional £350 per year for Sky Sports, on top of my licence fee) and so I quickly stopped being grateful again.

I’m sure the Murdoch Minion’s had a plan that giving us this teaser might tempt some of us to part with more of our cash, by showing all the wonderful stuff we could have for just £30 a month (on Virgin Media). The trouble is, in spite of the whole weekend being entirely free, the only thing I actually wanted to watch, was the race. The rest of their offering, outside of the football season, was entirely uninspiring! For me, it left me less inclined to subscribe, not more so!

To be fair, however, I do now have something of a dilemma! My instinct is to take any available option not to put more money into Murdoch’s pocket. But, I now have a 17 year old daughter, an avid F1 fan, who has just spent an entire weekend in front of the F1 channel, with it’s wall to wall repeats of Free Practice 1, 2 and 3, Qualifying, the Race itself, the F1 Show, an Interview with Jenson and all over and over again! She’s hooked, and I’m under pressure!

Attempted Delivery

July 20, 2012 Leave a comment

One for a Friday afternoon.

I think Lee Evans’ ‘Attempted Delivery’ is a work of genius.

Attempted Delivery

Though seeing as this has now happened to me twice in the space of a few weeks, I’m beginning to think we must be living on the Moon, instead of Hampshire!

We have running water and electricity, we get our bins collected every week (or so), supermarket vans and guys on mopeds turn up with food. Even removal lorries mange to make it through this uncharted ‘Here be Dragons’ wasteland, somewhere west of Guildford!

So how is it that I have now lost two days of my life and spent about £15 in premium rate phone calls, so that a City Link driver can twice ‘attempt’ a delivery, only to encounter a low bridge about a mile from his destination, turn around and give up!

Have they never heard of sat-nav!

According to their web site slogan, “Next day. Same day. Every Way.”

How about, “Try the Other Way!”

The golden age of Technology

July 13, 2012 Leave a comment

The fact that the world seems to be falling apart around us these days, hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Mobile network logos

I’m not referring to the fact that the Gulf Stream has finally gone AWOL and we appear to be shifting between a tropical monsoon climate and the new ice age, but the nightmare scenario that stuff keeps not working!

The fact that O2 users have had to pick up a landline phone recently or RBS customers need  to speak to a person in order to check their bank balance, has been making major headline news!

Don’t you think that maybe we’re all getting a bit too far up our own technology these days and we just can’t handle it when it’s not there anymore! Doesn’t anyone else remember the days before mobile phones, before the internet, before cash machines? We managed to get by and no one blew a gasket because it took a week to clear a cheque, or a day to deliver a letter or you had to wait 5 minutes in a queue for a public phone.

I think it’s sad that we’ve lost that level of patience with our lives, but I’m certainly as guilty as the next man!

On Sunday I was lucky enough to get a couple of tickets for Silverstone and I duly sat down in my seat, with my iPhone Official F1 Timing app in hand, ready to enjoy the day. To my total horror, I then discovered that despite my phone claiming to have a full 3G signal, I could not get a data connection to anything! I was completely cut off from the world!

I then tried my daughter’s iPhone on O2. Even in the days before the Armageddon, there was nothing, a great empty internet void! Damn You Technology, I cursed, despite Vodafone’s logo being plastered on every corner and even on my hat, you’ve managed to ruin my day!!

Then I remembered I was there to watch a motor race and everything was OK.

A first class education!

I couldn’t resist showing this! The card was issued by my son’s school this week, to record the payments made towards a trip to Europe next year.

I’m a little disappointed that they didn’t just pretend it was deliberate and offer a prize for the first person to spot the mistake!

Surprising as it may seem, James is actually doing quite well in maths.
